Foreword by the President of EPADG
Hon. Dr. Michael L. Kaingu
Democracy gave Africa its voice. It was the instrument of liberation, the rallying cry of “one man, one vote.” But while democracy brought us independence, it has not produced the ethical, competent, and transparent leadership our continent so urgently needs.
Too often, democracy has been reduced to legitimacy without merit. Leaders are elected, yet many lack the skills, integrity, or vision to govern effectively. The result is that Africa remains underdeveloped and dependent, despite its abundant natural resources, youthful human capital, and cultural strength.
At Emeritus Parliamentarians in Africa for Democratic Governance (EPADG), we stand as a nonpartisan platform devoted to mentoring and shaping the next generation of African leaders. We believe that democracy must now evolve. For Africa to thrive, legitimacy at the ballot must be accompanied by competence, ethics, and accountability.
But this evolution cannot succeed without a deeper mindset change. Leadership begins with individuals who are effective, disciplined, and service-driven. A changed mindset empowers leaders to manage time wisely, serve both internal and external communities with respect, and prepare responsibly for succession. With this foundation, democracy can mature into a system that does not only provide choice but also delivers genuine excellence in governance.
To Africa’s youth, I say: you are the custodians of this transformation. It is not enough to demand a vote; you must also demand leaders who are ethical, capable, and transparent — and you must embody those values yourselves.
EPADG exists to guide and mentor you on this path. Together, we can cultivate leadership that reflects not only the spirit of democracy but also the discipline and integrity of a new mindset.
Africa’s future depends on it.
